🇺🇸 Watch these All-American classics for the 4th
Your patriotic movie roster for the 4th, plus Carrie Bradshaw fashion.
happy 4th, consumer!
Today is an important day to remember the inception of our country and all those who fought for our freedom and democracy that we are so fortunate to enjoy today. Film in America has played an important role over the years too, acting as a record of time and preserving the societal and cultural behaviors and attitudes of people in the past. They are evidence for what it was like to experience some of our country’s greatest landmarks, monuments, and events, but in a different decade. And of course, they equip younger generations not only with the facts of the world’s most indelible turning points in history, but with the stories and emotions of the people living through them.
Movies and tv continue to serve as mirrors for today’s cultural, political, and societal events, so make sure you spend your long weekend enjoying some older films or films about the history of our country. I’ve shared a few of my favorite options below!
Email me your thoughts on film, tv, or what you’d like to see in this newsletter at [email protected]!
…and just like that, sjp is all over nyc
“When one door closes, a shoebox opens.” Sarah Jessica Parker is back in action as her beloved Carrie Bradshaw filming season 3 of …And Just Like That. Several photos of the incredible fashion has surfaced so naturally, I had to pick an outfit for this section of the newsletter. I found affordable options for this outfit with a couple of elevated pieces for the shoes and the purse. Shop the look here!
what i’m watching this week
A Family Affair (2024): I love me a lighthearted rom/com and Nicole Kidman so I’m excited to watch this new one that recently released on Netflix. On Netflix.
Am I OK? (2024): If you read last week’s newsletter, you might have noted I love Dakota Johnson and I find her hilarious. She’s the lead in this movie where she plays Lucy, who reveals her biggest secret to her best friend upon finding out that she is moving to London. I wanted to add this to my watchlist mostly because DJ’s humor seems like it will be funny in this. On Max.
The Sandlot (1993): This just feels like the perfect 4th of July classic to watch with the kids this weekend! The only thing I need to say about this movie is that if you haven’t seen it, you need to watch it right now. An American classic. On Hulu and Disney+.
what to watch for the 4th of july weekend
All movies and tv shows that I recommend in this section are included with a subscription. I have also viewed and approved every recommendation personally. It’s my goal to make recommendations that will satisfy what you’re in the mood for so none of your precious downtime is wasted!
Drama: Born on the Fourth of July (1989): Watch for a true, ultimate story of patriotism. Starring Tom Cruise, directed by Oliver Stone. This movie is a biography of Ron Kovic, a dedicated marine who becomes paralyzed in the Vietnam War, prompting him to become an anti-war and pro-human rights activist. Tom Cruise’s older movies don’t miss! Leaves July 31! On Netflix.
Drama: Moneyball: Watch for an Oscar-nominated (in several categories) film that tells a story fans don’t see about baseball. This is one of mine and Thor’s favorite films ever. It’s reveals such an interesting and captivating side to baseball about player analysis that I never knew was so calculated. Based on a true story. On Netflix.
Comedy: Nate Bargatze: The Tennessee Kid: Watch for family-safe stand-up comedy that will give you belly laughs. The jokes Nate Bargatze makes are so relatable to parents in their 30s and 40s. I felt so seen. His stone-faced stoicism and monotone voice is hilarious and definitely his trademark. I need to watch it again. On Netflix.
Comedy: Forrest Gump (1994): Watch for a feel-good tale of an unlikely hero (and of course, this is an all-time classic). Starring Tom Hanks is one of his most renowned roles in his career, Forrest Gump is a family favorite here in America. On Paramount+ and SHOWTIME.
Horror: The Purge (2013): Watch for a scary could-be-real-life event underneath a despaired government. This is the first movie of the series and Thor and I saw this in theaters. To this day, he claims it has changed his life and outlook on governing. It’s such a unique concept and I enjoyed it as well. On Peacock.
Documentary: Quarterback (2023): Watch for a behind-the-scenes look at NFLs highest-performing quarterbacks. This is a documentary series and while I’m not one to enjoy a full game of football from start to finish, I do enjoy the stories behind America’s most beloved game. This one delivered! On Netflix.
Kids: The Little Rascals (1994): Watch for a trip back to your early childhood and innocent fun. I’ve been wanting to watch this movie with my kids for quite some time and the 4th of July weekend feels like a great time because this movie reminds me of summer as a kid. It also reminds me of a time before advanced technology when playing outside was superior! On Netflix.
in theaters
The 4th of July is always one of the best weekends of the year to catch a new movie at the theaters, where there are a plethora to choose from. This year is no different, with multiple options in several genres and for kids.
Despicable Me 4 | MaXXXine | Bad Boys: Ride or Die |
The Despicable Me movie series is a popular one in our household and I even loved it when the first one came out in 2010 before I had kids. Steve Carrell is always a good time.
Director Ti West is on a role with his X film series and his third installment in the series, MaXXXine, is one I’ve been anticipating for quite some time! The original film in the series is X, the prequel is Pearl, and the sequel is MaXXXine. This is a slasher film.
I had to throw Bad Boys: Ride or Die on my watchlist because the oldies from 1995 and 2003 bring back such good memories for me as a kid. I miss action films like this (Rush Hour is in a similar vein) and I hope that this one feels like the OGs!
Films that I’ve mentioned in previous newsletters that are still in theaters that I have either seen or are on my watchlist are Inside Out 2, Kinds of Kindness, The Bikeriders, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1, A Quite Place: Day One, Daddio, and Thelma.
