TV Series: My Top Amazon Prime Video Picks Right Now

The weekend is near and you need something to do in your downtime.

hey, consumer.

Okay, here we are with part two of my top Amazon Prime Video picks: TV Series edition! Because you might not know and therefore will be missing out on TONS of great content, I have to reiterate that if you have an Amazon Prime subscription where you get free 2-day delivery on your orders, then you have access to tons of FREE movies and tv shows. If you don’t have it, you can ditch your fomo and sign up here. And as always, all of my recommendations are FREE with a subscription.

I’ve decided to ramp up my threads account by sharing a lot of my thoughts, questions, and concerns about what I’m consuming in more real time (plus other random life things). So while this newsletter serves as a great resource for what to watch (and you can save every edition in a folder to reference later), my threads account is more interactive and in real-time. If you want to check it out, follow me here and let’s chat!

jennifer aniston is a mess

While filming the morning show season 4, Jennifer Aniston (character: Alex Levy) was filming amongst a crowd of protestors when she got doused in fake oil. The moment has gone viral on the internet so naturally, I wanted to feature her outfit this week (sans the oil).

Jen’s outfit in this scene is definitely your basic, news anchor style where it stays professional and inside the lines. 🥱 I wanted to jazz it up a little bit with more contrast between the color of the pants and the white top. I also ditched the no sleeve button up (button down?) for a more stylish off-the-shoulder top.

If you haven’t seen The Morning Show yet, you can catch up on the first three seasons on Apple TV+. It’s my recommendation to watch each season as soon as it drops because they mirror a lot of the storylines in the show with very recent, real life news stories (like COVID, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and Matt Lauer’s highly inappropriate workplace behavior).

what to watch on prime video

All movies and tv series that I recommend in this section are included with your Amazon Prime subscription. I have also viewed and approved every recommendation personally. It’s my goal to make recommendations that will satisfy what you’re in the mood for so none of your precious downtime is wasted!

Action/Comedy/Fantasy: The Boys (2019): Watch for a new take on superheroes with Seth Rogen-type humor. There’s Seth Rogen-type humor because he is actually involved in this show. It’s a very satirical and humorous take on the superhero concept. I feel like it really answers the question, “If superheroes were actually a thing today, what would they be like?” And it kind of hits the nail on the head. Certainly funny, definitely crude, and overall entertaining. On Prime Video.

Action/Fantasy: Heroes (2007): Watch for a more family-friendly version of a superhero show that’s mysterious. Anyone remember when this show came out?? I was hooked on it! I found it so entertaining and so mysterious, constantly needing to know the truth behind these superpeople. I hope I’d feel the same way if I watched it today, years later. From what I remember though, this is worth the watch and friendly to older kids! There are four seasons to binge. On Prime Video.

Action/Drama: Jack Ryan (2018): Watch if you’re craving something like Mission Impossible or Homeland. Nothing can quite top Mission Impossible and Tom Cruise’s genius but this show, based on the Tom Clancy books, is really great! It’s more realistic than Mission Impossible movies (meaning there are no crazy gadgets, outrageous stunts, or disguises) and it follows storylines more similar to Homeland. If you’re really wanting to engage in a good “spy” story, this show will certainly satisfy. I wouldn’t have normally picked John Krasinski to be in an action role like this, but he plays the part very well, breaking him free of being known as just Jim from The Office. On Prime Video.

Crime/Drama: Broadchurch (2013): Watch for a really good British crime drama with a more raw feel (oftentimes, I think they do crime tv better than Hollywood). This was one of the first British tv shows we watched and we were not disappointed. It was definitely the first thing I saw Olivia Colman (The Bear, The Favourite, The Crown) in too. She is amazing as per usual. David Tennant, the lead male, is also fabulous in this. There are three seasons of this show (1 is free on Prime, 2 & 3 are available for purchase). On Prime Video.

Comedy: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2016): Watch for an uppity, fast-talking comedy about comedy. Taking place in the 1950s and 1960s, Midge Maisel tries to find herself after divorcing her cheating husband and she does so by becoming a stand-up comedian. It’s a common theme we talk about in today’s society, but Midge is navigating her independence in a decade when women weren’t supposed to be independent. So I love that about this story. But I also love the costumes, the setting, and the dialogue. Every character is so well-developed (and hilarious). You won’t watch this show for Midge’s stand-up material; that’s not the point of the show. The funny parts are off the stage. I find myself rewatching this quite a bit. It’s a cozy show for sure. Even the men love this one! On Prime Video.

Docuseries: LuLaRich (2021): Watch for another crazy pyramid scheme story that is equally mind-blowing, maddening, and sad. This is a four-part docuseries about the MLM (the nice way of saying “pyramid scheme"), LuLaRoe, a clothing company known for it’s eccentric leggings. When they began distributing defective clothing, naturally, things began to go awry. The ridiculous husband and wife founders are interviewed in this docuseries and watching them is a circus in itself. They’re delusional and out of touch and you just want to slap them through the screen. But adding on all the other crazy things that are uncovered about this company will really blow your mind. The amount of lives they’ve wrecked is so sad. I watched this in half a Saturday; captivating! On Prime Video.

Interview/Unscripted: Hot Ones (2022): Watch your favorite celebrities answer questions while eating spicy hot wings. I love this show! I always tune in when some of my favorite celebrities are on it. It’s an easy watch, something to throw on when you’re multitasking and I think the concept is just genius. We get to see a different side to some of our favorite entertainers. I’m not a huge fan of the host; he’s a little dull to me, but maybe it fares well since we want to focus on the guests anyway. On Prime Video.

Drama/Crime: Goliath (2016): Watch for a compelling crime drama full of twists and turns. Billy Bob Thornton plays Billy McBride, a washed up lawyer who is also a drunk. But his a wrongful death case falls into his lap and he takes on the law firm he helped build. Each season is about Billy and his legal team taking on a new Goliath. Season 1 is hands down my favorite, but they’re all entertaining! On Prime Video.

in theaters

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest work is finally here and might I add, highly anticipated (I personally can’t wait). Thrillers might be my favorite genre and M. Night Shyamalan can scratch that itch very well at times, but not so much at others. However, I have high hopes for this film. Let’s also just point out that Josh Hartnett is back and better than ever, right?? He recently returned to the scene in Oppenheimer, The Bear, and Black Mirror and as one of my favorite actors from my younger years, I am here for it. He still looks great too 😉

Fun fact about Trap… the recording artist in the film is actually M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, Saleka Shyamalan, and she wrote all the songs that you’ll hear in the movie. Pays to be a nepo baby, but she truly seems very talented and therefore, well-deserved!

If you’re in the mood to watch some other M. Night Shyamalan movies, some of my favorites are The Visit, The Village, Signs, The Sixth Sense, and Split.

If you’re looking for a new movie to see with your kids, Harold and the Purple Crayon is out this weekend. Based on the beloved children’s book, it’s a story about Harold who can make anything come to life by drawing it. Forewarning: Rotten Tomatoes critics aren’t loving this movie at the moment, giving it a 38%.

If you’re wanting something a little more off the beaten path, Dìdi is out this weekend as well. It’s an indie film that is getting rave reviews from both critics and audiences. It’s a semi-autobiographical coming of age story from writer-director, Sean Wang. The trailer was such a vibe and had me sold on seeing this movie. It looks beyond relatable. Watch it here.

Films that I’ve mentioned in previous newsletters that are still in theaters that I have either seen or are on my watchlist are:

  • Deadpool & Wolverine

  • Despicable Me 4

  • Longlegs

  • Twisters (watch the original on HBO Max!)

  • Inside Out 2

  • Fly Me to the Moon (leaving soon)

  • A Quite Place: Day One (leaving soon)
