jessica biel is the better sister
Variety reported that Amazon Prime Video has ordered a series adaptation of the Alafair Burke novel starring Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks. Banks and Biel will also serve as executive producers. Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella, Pam & Tommy) is the director.
The series is a thriller about Chloe (Biel), who moves through the world with her handsome lawyer husband Adam and teenage son Ethan by her side while her estranged sister Nicky (Banks) hustles to make ends meet while trying to stay clean,” per the official description. “When Adam is brutally murdered, the prime suspect sends shockwaves through the family, laying bare long-buried secrets.”
This series feels similar to The Girlfriend, which I featured in this section of the newsletter last week. I’ll be curious to see how the two stack up against each other, especially if they end up releasing around the same time!
For this outfit, I wanted to go with a less “in the office” look and a more “upscale casual” look. Thus, I replaced the fabric with denim.
i just finished…
Crime/Docuseries: Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter (2024): Watch for a quick, 2-part docuseries about a missing 14-year-old girl where secrets reveal themselves from start to finish. From the viewer’s perspective, this is the captivating piece that keeps us on our toes, despite how gut-wrenching the story is. There are details of child abuse in this, which is always so difficult for any sane person to stomach, but it’s a story that does find some resolve in the end, despite the devastating circumstances. The docuseries is very well done, both visually and how they told the story from beginning, middle, to end. A+ for me. I also caught that Charlize Theron is a producer on it! On Netflix.
what to watch tonight
All movies and tv series that I recommend in this section are included with streaming subscriptions. I have also viewed and approved every recommendation personally. It’s my goal to make recommendations that will satisfy what you’re in the mood for so none of your precious downtime is wasted!
Romance/Drama: Partner Track (2022): Watch for a Hallmark-esque, girly show about a woman’s juggle between career and love. I can be tend to be a snob about tv and film (I often check myself!), but really at the end of the day, who am I kidding. I love anything that keeps my attention. And while this show is doused with cheesiness, I enjoyed the lightness of watching main character, Ingrid, struggle with her moral compass while trying to make partner at a NYC law firm, especially when she is faced with romantic obstacles. Based on Helen Wan’s 2013 novel. On Netflix.
Drama: Better Call Saul (2022): Watch for a Breaking Bad spin-off that I’d argue is better. If you loved Breaking Bad, you’ll love this. I personally think it’s better, which is quite a feat for a spin-off to achieve! This show takes place before the events of Breaking Bad, following the life of one of its most beloved characters, Saul Goodman. The same creators of Breaking Bad worked on this show too. I have watched this show several times it’s that good. On Netflix.
Crime/Thriller: Bloodline (2017): Watch for an intense thriller that will keep you hooked and wanting for more. This show is one where the characters plummet to rock bottom by the end of the last season. It follows the Rayburn family, a pillar of their Florida Keys community, but when all family members gather for their parents 45th wedding anniversary, tensions rise, paranoia sets in, and secrets come out. Season 1 of this show had me hooked. Seasons two and three weren’t as strong, but I still enjoyed them and felt the ending was satisfying. On Netflix.
Comedy/Drama: Beef (2023): Watch for an award-winning series that will become a new favorite. The fact that this entire story stems from a road rage incident between the two mains, Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun), is pure gold to me. This was hands down one of my favorites series of 2023. It’s offbeat and hilarious yet intriguing and gripping. And it’s truly a great reminder that we have no idea what someone else might be going through… so the next time you want to send that snarky email or honk your car horn, maybe think again.😅 This is a must watch for everyone. On Netflix.
Spy/Comedy: Killing Eve (2022): Watch for a show with its own, original style (that I love) and a spy game of cat and mouse. This series evokes a style that I’ve never seen done before. And when something has it’s own style, original style, it brings out different feelings in you. What Killing Eve is such a master at, is juggling action, psychological taunts, dry comedy, and honestly, a bit of fear. Villanelle, while a sarcastic personality, is a terrifying character. Mostly because she’s unpredictable. This show is loads of fun. On Netflix.
Drama/Psychological: Behind Her Eyes (2021): Watch for a shocking ending that you’ll never expect. The journey of this show seemed to be more receptive to audiences than the end. The ending is a huge twist and several audience members didn’t overly care for it. However, I have to appreciate the fact that I was totally surprised and would have never guessed that ending. I honestly felt strange afterward and couldn’t tell if I loved it or hated it. The ending was silly and ridiculous, yet, I was fascinated. This tells me that it’s something worth consuming. On Netflix.
Comedy Horror: Santa Clarita Diet(2017): Watch for a quirky, unsettling comedy with Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. The style and story of this show were so unexpected and literally had me confused for a couple of episodes. It’s so outlandish and ridiculous and hilarious and gross all at once that it took me a minute to digest (no pun intended) what was actually happening. This show is about married couple, Joe and Sheila, who are living the quintessential suburban life as realtors in Santa Clarita. Sheila experiences a sudden transformation and wakes up with an insatiable appetite for… human. They spend the series trying to figure out what happened to Sheila, while keeping her satisfied. I love the contradictions of this show. How is it that it’s so unsettling and icky, yet cute and cozy at the same time? On Netflix.
