đŸ“ș Movies: My Top Amazon Prime Video Picks Right Now

If you have Prime, you have access to FREE movies and shows at your fingertips.

hey, consumer.

I think nearly everyone on the planet owns an Amazon Prime subscription, and with that comes a plethora of free movies and tv shows. If you don’t have it, you can ditch your fomo and sign up here. I personally love to browse the Prime Video catalog because I feel that they tend to have some of the best movies from the ‘90s, ‘00s, and ‘10s, which of course, was my childhood. They also get their hands of some of today’s in demand films, exclusively offering them to audiences (like Saltburn).

So this week, I wanted to do a 2-part newsletter sharing just a handful of My Top Picks on Prime Video Right Now. Part 1 (below) will share movies and Part 2 (next week) will share TV Shows. As always, all of my recommendations are FREE with a subscription. Hope you love these!

Email me your thoughts on film, tv, or what you’d like to see in this newsletter at [email protected] or reply to this email.

margot robbie on set

This movie is titled (as of now, at least) A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, directed by Kogonada (Columbus) and starring Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie. There isn’t a ton of information out there yet about this movie, but I found this on a reddit thread, so take it with a grain of salt:

After meeting at a wedding, David and Sarah embark on a big, bold, beautiful journey with a little help from their 1996 Passat GPS and a little bit of magic for the road trip of their lives.

And a screenplay review site called it “500 Days of Summer meets La La Land meets Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets A Christmas Carol”.

reddit thread

Margot’s costumes from this film are interesting and make me really curious to know more about her character. You won’t see them in my image below, but she is seen in other images wearing gaucho jeans and knee-high brown boots with this oversized red blazer, so I chose to include product recs for those too. You can see more pap photos here.

The gaucho jeans and hair are telling me that this movie might take place in the ‘70s. I’m also getting horse back riding vibes, so we’ll see if that shakes out in the end. At first, I really disliked this outfit, but more and more, I’m sort of into the gaucho denim and knee-high boot look. See some style inspiration here to understand why I’m saying this lol.

For this look, the button down shirt should be tucked in and the blazer should be loose and oversized. Shop my take on this look here!

what to watch on prime video

All movies and tv shows that I recommend in this section are included with your Amazon Prime subscription. I have also viewed and approved every recommendation personally. It’s my goal to make recommendations that will satisfy what you’re in the mood for so none of your precious downtime is wasted!

Drama/Thriller: Saltburn (2023): Watch for scenes that go there đŸ˜± and a perfect performance by Barry Keoghan. Saltburn is pure madness, feeling like a mix of The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cruel Intentions. It’s a story of obsession, infatuation, desire and what can happen when someone succumbs to it all. Directed by Oscar-winning Emerald Fennell, the characters are well developed and set in a stunning baroque, English estate. Yet, by the end of the story, you’ll want to leave this place as fast as you can. On Prime Video.

Romance: Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961): Watch for a charming classic romance with the beloved Audrey Hepburn. This is the perfect place to start if you don’t watch many older, classic films (especially if you love a romance). Everyone knows this movie exists, but I don’t feel like younger generations watch many older movies, unless it’s in The History of Cinema 101. And they deserve the attention! On Prime Video.

Drama: Air (2023): Watch for a not-so-known angle of Nike that you never knew about and how Michael Jordan saved today’s biggest brand. For some reason this movie had me saying “Fuck yeah” in my head by the end. I had no idea that Nike’s sales and marketing were falling far behind other big brands like Adidas at one point in time. Today, we just instantly view Nike as the top dog. This movie captures how Nike pursued Michael Jordan (before he was Michael Jordan) to become the face of the brand, completely revolutionizing the relationship between brands and athletes from a marketing and advertising standpoint. On Prime Video.

Rom/Com: A Rainy Day in New York (2019): Watch if you loved Vicky, Christina Barcelona. Directed by Woody Allen (who also did Vicky Christina Barcelona), TimothĂ©e Chalamet and Selena Gomez (with appearances from Liev Schreiber and Jude Law) lead this cozy film. It takes place over the course of one day, with Allen’s notable kitschy dialogue and eccentric vocabulary taking center stage. I’ll admit, the language is a bit outlandish for the youthful age of these characters and at times had me rolling my eyes, but it’s also an Allen staple. The ending felt a bit off too: Selena Gomez’s character disappears with no explanation (unless I missed it) and then reappears at the end. Yet, sometimes for me, the lounge music and city setting trump any qualms I may have. Overall, this movie is no Vicky Christina Barcelona, but you get the same effect and therefore, it’s still worth a watch on a rainy day. On Prime Video.

Rom/Com: CafĂ© Society (2016): Watch for more Vicky Christina Barcelona vibes, but instead of embarking on a modern-day Eurotrip, we’re going to 1930s Hollywood. Another Woody Allen film, Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carrell, and Blake Lively are at the helm of CafĂ© Society. The vibe is 1930s, old Hollywood glam, romance, social club New York, and big dreams. I saw this in theaters and absolutely loved it. One of my favorite Woody Allen films. On Prime Video.

Rom/Com: The Big Sick (2017): Watch for a different type of rom-com that sets a new standard (and will probably make you even more emo). With a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, this is a rom/com that skips the cheese (I know, we all love the cheese sometimes) and instead takes a realistic approach on love. In a culture clash between Pakistan-born, Kumail, and your all-American white girl, Emily, the two struggle to see a future together, until Emily is hospitalized with an unknown illness (but don’t worry, this isn’t a devastating movie about sickness). It’s also based on the main actor’s real-life relationship. On Prime Video.

Action/Adventure: Apocolypto (2006): Watch for an intense journey in an indigenous land that will get your blood pumping. Produced, directed, and co-written by Mel Gibson, this is a hardcore action film about the Mayan kingdom and its leaders fearing their demise is near. The visuals are incredible and audiences revere it as a masterpiece. Be prepared for intensity. On Prime Video.

Action/Adventure: Gladiator (2000): Watch for endless action with a never-boring story. It should be a crime if you haven’t seen this movie. Ridley Scott is one of the most accomplished directors, in my opinion, known for too many incredible movies to list (but here are some: American Gangster, Alien, Blade Runner, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down
you get it). It’s full of action, it’s intense, and I just love Russell Crowe in it. This is a movie you can see a million times and you’ll never get bored of it. Watch it before Gladiator II comes out on November 22! On Prime Video.

Drama: Blue Crush (2002): Watch for a female-led sports competition movie (surfing) that’s a cultural gem. This movie won’t go down in history as one of the best ever, but it’s made its mark on the generation that grew up with it and will be passed on for generations to come. With a focus on female surfers, all men and women, boys and girls seem to love this movie. There’s sports, love, partying, the beach, and chasing big dreams
What’s not to enjoy? On Prime Video.

Comedy: Bottoms (2023): Watch my reel about why I loved this movie. Starring Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edibiri, and Kaia Gerber. On Prime Video.

Horror/Crime: The Silence of the Lambs (1991): Watch to get the serious creeps from one of the best horror films of all time. I think that what makes this movie so good is that it bounces between psychological thriller, mystery and crime, and straight-up horror. The creep factor is next level and you get it from two different villains in the story, Hannibal Lecter and Buffalo Bill. Whether you’ve seen this or not, it’s a must-watch and never a repeat offender. On Prime Video.

in theaters

Deadpool & Wolverine is the shining star for this weekend’s new theater releases. I’m sure you saw Blake Lively and Gigi Hadid’s take on the two Marvel characters at the New York premiere, which, alone, would drive me to go see this movie. Mostly all Marvel movies are good, but the Deadpool film series is hands down in my top 3, even though he’s not an Avenger. ***I don’t nerd out on Marvel so don’t @ me, people.*** The R-rating is the cherry on top.

This is the 3rd installment in the film series and it follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, receiving rave reviews from critics and earning an 81% (so far) with a Certified Fresh distinction on Rotten Tomatoes. Can’t wait to see it. I love when I have absolutely no idea what to expect from the storyline either.

Films that I’ve mentioned in previous newsletters that are still in theaters that I have either seen or are on my watchlist are:

  • Despicable Me 4

  • Longlegs

  • Twisters (watch the original on HBO Max!)

  • Inside Out 2

  • Bad Boys: Ride or Die

  • Fly Me to the Moon (last week in theaters!)

  • A Quite Place: Day One (last week in theaters!)
